Chiropractic and Ear Infections

By Nathan Leavitt

Ear infections are common in children. Children under the age of seven are prone to ear infections because they have a shorter Eustachian tube. They have not yet developed the resistance to bacteria and viruses that adults have. It is hard to see your child in pain and it may seem like there is little you can do. Ear infections are a common reason for a visit to the Pediatrician's Office.

A common cause of ear infections is otitis media which is inflammation of the middle ear. When the middle ear becomes infected, pressure builds up behind the ear drum (tympanic membrane) resulting in intense pain. In severe or untreated circumstances the ear drum may rupture causing pus to enter the ear canal. It is common for ear infections to follow a cold.

Traditional treatment of ear infections involves antibiotic therapy or surgical implanting tubes in the ears. It is important to understand that antibiotics will only help bacterial ear infections and not viral. This is because the antibiotics only have effect on bacteria and not viruses. Therefore, antibiotic therapy is useless for viral ear infections. Antibiotics can also kill the healthy flora (bacteria) used by the body in digestion and other functions. If antibiotic therapy is used, it is good to eat yogurt or probiotics to help replenish this good flora.

Ear tubes often recommended by doctors for those with repeated ear infections. This is to help drain fluid that typically stays behind the eardrum. The specialist places the tube through a little surgical opening produced inside the eardrum. The child is unconscious through the surgery. Side effects might be infection which consists of a smelling, green discharge. Scarring of the eardrum may also happen which can trigger damage to hearing.

Instead of traditional methods, many parents are now choosing a more conservative approach. Chiropractic does not treat ear infections. However, it is very common for those with ear infections to also have spinal problems in the neck. An understanding of the nervous system can help to understand why chiropractic works so well in helping many with ear infections. Many parents understand the benefits of chiropractic and report excellent results with their children following chiropractic treatment and resolving their ear infections.

How does this happen? Chiropractic assists to get rid of interference to the nerves. It is typical for those with ear infections to also have misaligned spinal bones in the neck. When these bones are misaligned, it causes pressure on the delicate nerves that exit the spine. Some of these nerves in the neck originate from the brainstem and continue towards the ear. These nerves manage, monitor and regulate the ear. Pressure on these nerves from spinal troubles will lead to a loss of function to the ear due to the fact nerve flow is disrupted. Ear infections might be the result.

In addition to misaligned spinal bones, tight muscles of the neck occurs in conjunction. When the muscles become tense, it causes pressure on the lymphatic drainage ducts around the ear. This will cause a loss of drainage that usually accompanies ear infections. Chiropractic care will also help relax the muscles within the neck. Chiropractic is a superb natural approach to assist those suffering from ear infections.

Ear Infection - How To Tell If Your Dog Has It

By Wayne Harley

Has your dog started acting as if he has an object in his ear that is driving him nuts? Is he using cotton swabs frequently, like he is trying desperately to eliminate wax buildup? Is he bending his head to the side, shaking it like he just jumped out of the swimming hole? Your dog may have an ear infection.

Your Dog's Ear Infection Issues

If your dog's possible ear infection goes without treatment it can get deeper into the ear. This causes the pain the dog is in to grow sharply. Following are more symptoms if the infection gets worse:

* Your dog may hold his head very still, and to its side. * Opening his mouth or touching his head will cause your dog pain. * Dizziness. Dogs can become dizzy, with bad balance and coordination, as the infection travels to the inner ear. * Dog may walk around in circles. * Vomiting.

Dog Ear Infections and Their Potential Causes

* Wet ears not drying after swimming or bathing. * Growths in the ear canal. * Ear wax building up. * Hair removal from ears from the groomer. * Untreated ear mites * Using cotton tips to clean ears (can force things deeper into ear canal) * Allergies due to grasses, ear medications, or a number of other allergic sources.

Take a few minutes to check your dogs health regularly. If you've chosen to clean your dogs ears yourself, please be very careful so as to not cause more problems. Looking for an ear infection quickly can save your dog a lot of pain. Your vet can give you the correct medicine to help get rid of your dog's infection.

A dog ear infection can be treated swiftly if identified early enough.

By Steve Wright

Dealing with a dog ear infection early is one of the most important ways to prevent it from getting out of control.

Canines are often affected with ear infections attributable to yeast and or bacterium. Dog breeds which may have very long droopy ears such as spaniels or bassets need a cleansing program in order to avoid infections, yet sometimes a dog ear infection may appear even though you may thoroughly clean your dog's ears frequently.

If you see that your dog is shaking their head often, pawing at his / her ears or even scratching them frequently, you ought to examine the ears a lot more closely to see if there is infections.

Your dog may respond to a dog ear infection by repeating these behaviors because he is attempting to reduce the annoyance.

Another obvious indication of a canine ear irritation is soreness or redness inside the ears, discharge and a stinky smell.

Your vet will examine your dog's ears with an otoscope. Next, he'll almost certainly take a sample of any substance within your dog's ear canal and also examine it under a microscope. He or she will likely then be able to determine the reason for the problem and the course of treatment.

Your dog will be prescribed with a treatment based on the particular infection. You will need to be vigilant about administering this medication for the full course of the therapy to ensure it is effective.

Hopefully, your dog will allow you to administer the medication in to the ear canal. Ear infections in dogs are incredibly painful and can be a great source of misery for the dog. Identifying and treating the infection as soon as possible is very important and the best approach to deal with ear infections.

Dogs with allergies can likewise show signs of an illness or infection but it could be something different altogether, this is why we need to watch our pets and keep an eye on their general or overall health patterns.

Natural Ear Infection Treatments Work by Raising Your Immune System

One of the most rapid and deeply acting natural ear infection treatments is homeopathic. Let me explain. Disease is all about a compromised immune system. It shows up in your weak point/s. Those (rare) people who have a wonderfully effective immunity, rarely get any disease, and react vigorously if one dares to try to get in. Usually this is in the form of a short, but violent fever.

So to avoid disease, it's best to look after this valuable, but intangible asset. To do this you need to focus on areas you are probably all ready aware of, but don't always put into action.

Ear Infections - Natural Homemade Remedies

Areas such as:

a healthy diet

plenty of natural sunshine on bare skin

your right amount of sleep

exercise

time spent relaxing

getting out into nature regularly

dealing with emotional challenges in a holistic way, as they arise

Smoking And Its Effect On Ear Infections

Taking medical and social drugs also compromise your immunity. Holistic health care is generally more effective and certainly less harmful. Homeopathy works by stimulating your immune system so can be the fastest and most complete ear infection treatments. Provided the right medicine has been chose.

Therein lies a potential problem. Homeopaths are spoilt for choice of medicines, with over 4,000 currently in 2010. Daunting though this may seem, it also means that there will be a good medicine for you. It's just that it may take a little time to find it. For the homeopathic home prescriber, there are only about 40 medicines. These are common and have a successful tract record in treating common acute diseases. So homeopathic home prescribing can be easy.

Silica is one of these common home prescribing medicines. It is also one of the best homeopathic medicines for any ear problems, whether it is an infection, a lack of balance or tinnitus (noises in your ear). However, your symptoms do need to match some of those of the medicine, to ensure any action of the medicine.

Ear Infection Home Remedy

The strong keynotes of Silica include:

acute or chronic ear infections

ear infections with hearing loss

noises, especially roaring

an inability to assimilate nutrition (so children can have development
problems)

aggravated by cold weather

symptoms are often worse at the full or new moon
